2016 Home Remodeling Design Trends

It is only July and already 2016 is distinguishing itself with bold, unique and forward thinking design for the home. Here are 5 trending design ideas for your home improvement project...

1. Colored stainless steel appliances
This trend has been developing but in 2016 we are seeing manufacturers respond to to consumer interest with wonderful new approaches to the standard stainless steel appliance façade. An example is the GE slate finish appliances. Smudge free with stainless touches like handles that provide an accent to the flat finish.

2. Nice appliances
Something we are seeing a lot in 2016 is niche appliances. Everything from steam ovens, warming drawers, mini-dishwashers (dishdraws), companion ranges, and built in coffee systems. This Sharp SuperSteam+ pictured is a three-in-one combination steam, convection and super-heated-steam oven.

3. Workhorse islands
Workhorse Islands have been on the rise in 2016. This trend combines deep storage, extra counter space, and more seating to a kitchen. The workhorse island is not just about a more efficient kitchen, it expands the use of the kitchen as a family gathering and entertaining space. In our modern Cape Cod kitchen (pictured above) cooking prep, seating and storage all combine in a beautiful mid-size island.

4. Mixing modern materials in the kitchen
Customizing kitchens through mixing modern materials has become popular. Using a mix of different materials can create a kitchen that is completely unique and personalized. With so many options for counters, flooring, and appliances it takes time and experience to design a practical and beautiful kitchen. The challenge is creating harmony while inviting color and texture in a space that has very practical and functional requirements.

5. Statement mirrors in bathrooms
Another trend that we see becoming very common is the use of custom mirrors in bathrooms. Less and less we see the standard mirrors which are replaced by statement pieces, framed mirrors, and sculptural mirrors. The impact the mirror has on the overall design of a bathroom cannot be understated. This is a trend that is exciting because a homeowner can really make their mark on a bathroom with statement mirror and transform a simple space.
