Home Design Trends You’ll See in 2021

2020 was a tough year, but one thing that came out of it was a new appreciation for our homes. What was once only a place to take off our shoes after commuting from a long day of work has now become our sanctuary — not only our place to eat and sleep, but our place of work, school, and spending more time with loved ones.

Because we all spent so much time at home, 2020 was the year of home renovations, and we’ve seen that trend carry over into this year even more. From complete rebuilds to room refreshes, we’ve all been eager to spruce up our homes and make them spaces that bring joy to ourselves and our families.

Now that we’re mid-way through the year, here are some of the popular home trends we’ve seen this year and will continue to see in the coming months.

Natural lighting

Nothing can dim your day, quite literally, like a lack of natural light in your home. Not only is it a mood booster, but it helps highlight the fixtures in your home and showcase your home. Even swapping out dark curtains for lighter ones and opening your windows when it’s nice out can make for a more inviting home.

Bigger showers

Even if homeowners decide to keep their bathroom size unchanged, we’ve seen many opting to upgrade the shower. In fact, a Houzz study found that 41% of renovators rely on their bathroom for rest and relaxation and 54% say that larger showers help them relax the most.

Prioritizing storage space

Traditional, Columbus

Were you like everyone else who found themselves desperately trying to minimize and get rid of things in 2020? After spending weeks at home, many of us became acutely aware of the clutter we’re surrounded by day-to-day. It became more important than ever to do away with those things that, as Marie Kondo says, “don’t bring us joy.” By prioritizing storage space and finding unique ways to tidy up, your home will be easier to maintain and even free up some space.

Light wood cabinets

Similar to the desire for natural light, many homeowners are looking for more ways to brighten up their space. One way to do this is to install light wood cabinets. When these are mixed with other neutral colors like whites and grays, you create the perfect palette for a warm and inviting home.

Wallpaper is making a comeback

After a few years of trying to make its way back into the forefront of design, wallpaper came through strong this year. You can use it for a statement wall, to line shelves or cabinets, or to go full steam ahead with a floor-to-ceiling project.

Multizone kitchens

Traditionally, a kitchen is designed with three zones in mind — the refrigerator, sink, and range — today, many homeowners are realizing the value in having additional space for others in the kitchen. A few design elements that we’ve seen a rise in popularity this year are dedicated zones for baking, prepping, and chopping as well as space for snacks, drinks, and homework. With kitchens becoming a central location for many families over the past year, this is a design trend we think we’ll continue to see moving forward.

Small scale rectangular tile patterns

From backsplashes to shower tile and floors, this pattern has taken off in 2021. This simple, elegant update can be customized to be the perfect addition to your kitchen or bathroom.

Going natural

From natural stones to earth tones, wicker and wood furniture, and more, more homeowners are adding relaxed and warm looks to their homes. Having these simple textures on more permanent fixtures in your home gives you the opportunity to be a little bolder when it comes to decorating your home.

Almost overnight, our outdoor space became an essential addition to our living space. To make the most of it, you’ll need a little shade on those sunny summer days. A pergola is a perfect solution for many homeowners and it can be installed in just a few days.
